{"id":15747,"date":"2026-06-03T08:58:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T22:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greenlifeindustryqld.org.au\/?p=15747"},"modified":"2026-06-03T09:46:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T23:46:42","slug":"fair-work-commission-announces-2026-wage-increase-what-greenlife-employers-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greenlifeindustryqld.org.au\/news\/fair-work-commission-announces-2026-wage-increase-what-greenlife-employers-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Fair Work Commission Announces 2026 Wage Increase: What Greenlife Employers Need to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This member update has been prepared in partnership with GIQ HR Essential Business Partner, UPP HR, to help greenlife businesses understand the implications of the Fair Work Commission&#8217;s 2026 Annual Wage Review decision.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has handed down its Annual Wage Review decision, announcing increases to minimum wages and award rates that will impact businesses across the greenlife industry from 1 July 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission has sought to balance a range of economic factors, including cost-of-living pressures, inflation, productivity, fuel prices and broader economic conditions, in determining this year&#8217;s increase.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>What Has Changed?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>National Minimum Wage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employees paid the National Minimum Wage will receive a <strong>6% increase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New National Minimum Wage rates:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hourly Rate:<\/strong> $26.44 per hour (up $1.49 per hour)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weekly Rate:<\/strong> $1,004.90 per week (up $56.90 per week)<\/li>\n<li>Casual employees should receive the applicable casual loading in addition to these rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nModern Award Employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employees covered by a Modern Award will receive a <strong>4.75% increase<\/strong> to their relevant classification rates. The updated award rates will apply from the <strong>first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>What Does This Mean for Employers?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Many greenlife businesses pay employees &#8220;above award&#8221; and may assume these increases do not apply to them. However, employers should take this opportunity to review their current pay structures and ensure they remain compliant.<\/p>\n<p>If an employee&#8217;s current rate remains above the new minimum award rate for their classification level, there may be no requirement to increase their wage.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the new award rate exceeds what the employee is currently being paid, employers must increase their wage to at least meet the new minimum entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>The critical first step is ensuring employees have been correctly classified under the relevant award.<\/p>\n<h6>&nbsp;<\/h6>\n<h6><strong>Common Compliance Risks<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>One of the most common issues identified by workplace relations specialists is businesses believing they pay above award rates without first confirming:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which award applies to their employees;<\/li>\n<li>The correct classification level for each employee; and<\/li>\n<li>Whether current wages remain above the updated minimum rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Classification levels should not be treated as a &#8220;set and forget&#8221; exercise. As employees gain skills, responsibilities or experience, their classification level may change over time.<\/p>\n<h6>&nbsp;<\/h6>\n<h6><strong>Awards Commonly Affecting Greenlife Businesses<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Depending on the nature of your business and workforce, relevant awards may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nursery Award<\/li>\n<li>Horticulture Award<\/li>\n<li>General Retail Industry Award<\/li>\n<li>Other industry-specific awards relevant to your operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Employers should review employee classifications and compare current rates against the updated award rates once published.<\/p>\n<h6>&nbsp;<\/h6>\n<h6><strong>Piece Rates Under the Horticulture Award<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Businesses engaging employees on piece rates should remember that the Horticulture Award includes requirements relating to the minimum hourly rate for pieceworkers.<\/p>\n<p>Employers should review their arrangements carefully to ensure compliance with minimum wage obligations.
